Students from Clifton C of E Primary School, part of the Rural Derbyshire School Sport Partnership (RDSSP), are celebrating after qualifying for the finals of a national swimming competition.

The school team, made up of Eddie Archer, Zizi Peck, Patrick Welsh and Alex Holt, came second in the small schools sections of the English Schools’ Swimming Association Relay Championships in Louth (Lincolnshire) on Friday 24th April.

They took part in two events: coming second in the freestyle relay meant they qualified for the final where they also came second (by just 0.06 of a second!), and the mixed stroke relay where they again came second in both their heat and final (by 0.14 seconds).

The silver medal winning finishes mean the team has now been invited to the association’s 21st annual Primary Schools’ Team Championships, representing the East Midlands Division in both freestyle and mixed stroke relays. The event is set to be held at Ponds Forge International Sports Centre in Sheffield on Saturday 20th June.

Head Teacher, Heidi Daughtry said: “I am very proud of our team’s achievements. They worked excellently together representing the school and the area outstandingly well. The children and I look forward to them swimming at Sheffield – for a small rural school this is a fantastic opportunity to compete at National Level.”

RDSSP Manager, Janice Price said: “I was delighted to find out about Clifton’s success in the competition and I hope this story inspires more local primary schools to get involved with swimming competitions both locally and nationally. I wish them the very best of luck in the finals and I will be rooting for them on the 20th of June!”

Communications Coordinator for Ashbourne and District Swimming Club, Vicky Scotcher said: “All of the youngsters have received swimming tuition at the club and we are very proud of them. Our head coach, Dafila Bourchier is more than happy to support the swimmers and offer extra training before the big day.”
