Students from Lady Manners School in Bakewell, part of the Rural Derbyshire School Sport Partnership, are celebrating after finishing first in the Derbyshire School Games Table Tennis Competition.
Zeta Graham, Ellie Turner, Pippa Bradstock and Maddie Hendry were victorious in the Under 13 Girls category, during the contest at Springwell Community College in Staveley (Chesterfield) on Thursday 27th of November.
40 school teams across Derbyshire took part in the competition held over 3 days in November and December, with 160 participants in different age categories.
The team won its first game against Eckington, showing a determined and competitive edge, before playing Springwell, where they were victorious again.
Their final match was against Long Eaton – a team with a player ranked third in the country. Zeta battled to win five points and the team won four out of six games.
Other RDSSP member schools performed well in the competition too:
• Osmaston C of E (VC) Primary School came in second place in both the Under 11 Boys and Girls competitions.
• Ashbourne’s Queen Elizabeth’s Grammar School Under 13 Boys got third place.
• Lady Manners came third in the Under 16 Boys and Girls categories.
Lady Manners School Curriculum Leader for PE, Rachel Pownall-Jones said: “Our Under 16 boys team progressed through to the county final last year so I knew if I had strength and depth in the U13 girls’ team we would be in with a good chance of winning. Table tennis is an up and coming sport for our school and with the U16 boys’ and girls’ teams winning bronze in the county finals this year, it shows what great talent we have.”
Lady Manners U13 girls team are now County Table Tennis Champions and go onto represent Derbyshire at the Regional Finals in Bradford on Sunday 1st February 2015.
